What to Do and Wear in Alexandria This Summer
Celebrating America's 250th anniversary celebrations are spilling over from D.C.! Between Sail Virginia's tall ships pulling into the Old Town waterfront June 12–14, a full season of outdoor concerts, public art, museum exhibits, and the kind of King Street evenings that stretch past sunset, this is a summer where the dress code matters.
We put together an event-by-event style guide covering exactly what to reach for, whether you’re spending the afternoon on the waterfront or heading straight from work to an outdoor lecture. All of it easy, all of it wearable, all of it in store.
TALL SHIPS WEEKEND · JUNE 12–14
The Waterfront Look
Sail Virginia 2026 — Old Town Alexandria Harbor
Alexandria becomes a Sail Virginia℠ 2026 Affiliate Harbor June 12–14, with iconic tall ships docking at the Old Town waterfront for a full three-day weekend. Plan for full days on your feet — the waterfront is walkable and breezy, evenings move to King Street, and the cobblestones are very real.
WHAT TO WEAR
- Light, easy sundress
- Leather sandals with a sole that handles cobblestones
- Woven leather tote or canvas crossbody
- Gold jewelry
- Silk scarf to tie at the neck or around a bag handle

OUTDOOR SUMMER CONCERTS
The Evening Garden Party
Al fresco music events, parks & open-air venues across Alexandria
Alexandria’s outdoor concert season runs all summer and there is truly no better excuse to wear the dress. Evenings are warm but there’s usually a breeze — a lightweight layer is always the right call.
WHAT TO WEAR
- Midi wrap dress in a warm print or solid
-
Low block-heel mule or strappy flat sandal
- Rattan or cork clutch
-
Gold layered necklaces

The Cultured Afternoon
Alexandria’s museums & year-round exhibits
Alexandria’s museums are running full programming this summer — exhibits, guided tours, and evening events that trace the full story of the city. Tailored but comfortable is the brief.
WHAT TO WEAR
- Tailored mini skirt
- Tucked-in linen or poplin button-down
- Ballet flat or low block-heel
- Mini structured leather bag
-
A faux cardigan — museums are always cold

PUBLIC ART WALKS & FAMILY EVENTS
The Effortless Saturday
Self-guided art tours, outdoor installations & family programming
New public art installations are woven throughout Alexandria this summer — the kind of thing that rewards a slow, wandering afternoon. You’ll cover distance. Dress for it.
WHAT TO WEAR
- Pull-on pants in khaki, stone, or white
-
Relaxed stripe or solid tee, front-tucked
-
A tote or lightweight backpack
- A hat — June sun is not a suggestion

KING STREET DINNER & EVENING PLANS
Old Town After Dark
Reservations, rooftops & King Street restaurants
King Street in summer is its own occasion. Dinner reservations, rooftop drinks, a walk back along the waterfront — Old Town evenings have a dress code of their own, even if that means dressing for the weather.
WHAT TO WEAR
- White smocked or eyelet dress
- Kitten heel mule or strappy sandal
- Small structured bag — rattan, leather, or wicker
- Gold hoops or something layered at the neck

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Pack
FABRIC FIRST
June in Alexandria is warm and humid. Linen is your best friend across every category — it breathes, it looks intentional even when wrinkled, and it transitions well from afternoon to evening. Cotton poplin and eyelet work in its place. Skip anything synthetic.
THE SHOE SITUATION
Old Town Alexandria is beautiful and the cobblestones will humble a stiletto. A leather sandal with real structure, a flat or low block-heel for evenings, and clean sneakers or loafers for daytime cover every situation on this list. Two pairs of shoes handles the whole weekend.
THE ACCESSORIES EDIT
Gold jewelry throughout — demi-fine or delicate. One silk scarf worn three different ways. A woven or rattan bag for day, something structured and small for evening. Tortoiseshell sunglasses. A hat you actually like wearing.
THE PALETTE
White and ecru are your summer non-negotiables. Layer in warm neutrals — sand, stone, khaki — and reach for terracotta, rust, or sage when you want something with more presence. One great print across the whole season is all you need.
Alexandria has the kind of summer that rewards being dressed for it.
